Last week, my vegan-activist friend Tylor and I launched his brainchild, The Fwooper Foundation. It is meant to be a Harry Potter-based fan activist group that will use the excitement surrounding the upcoming "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them" movie trilogy to get fan activists involved in helping the fantastic beasts in our own world.
When Tylor first came to me with the idea of starting this animal activism group, I said "yes" without a second thought. I mean, Harry Potter AND helping animals? Nothing could be a better fit. Especially since one of the main characters in the "Harry Potter" series, Hermione Granger, was herself a witch who did her best to create equality and fair treatment for her fellow magical beings.
Using the Fwooper as our mascot of sorts, we are setting out to "break the silencing charm" which has been placed on animals in our world and let their voices be heard. I'll explain further. The Fwooper is a magical creature found in the "Harry Potter" series and is described by world-renowned magizoologist Newt Scamander in his bestselling book "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" as an African bird with extremely vivid plumage in colors of orange, pink, lime green or yellow. The Fwoopers' song is so powerful that they must be sold with a Silencing Charm on them.
As Tylor says:
"The Fwooper Foundation believes that the creatures in our world do have a voice and that they are crying out for our help. Unfortunately, society has cast a Silencing Charm over their pleas for rescue, and that is why it is our job to break it. Animals who suffer at the hands of the Dark Arts for our food, clothing, and entertainment are abused in the worst ways imaginable. We all can choose to be like Hermione Granger and help make our world a better place for the real fantastic beasts."
I couldn't have put it better myself.
So right now, we are focusing on getting the word out about our organization with our first campaign, "Breaking the Silencing Charm." When fan activists complete certain missions on social media, we send them stickers and buttons as incentives. Once our base of membership grows, we will start on campaigns that will help animals around the world.
We have a lot of great work planned, but we need the Potter fandom's help to decrease world suck for animals. By spreading the word via our Breaking the Silencing Charm campaign, we can begin to sing the Fwooper Foundation's song of compassion. Together, through the magic of Harry Potter, we can help make the lives of the magical creatures in our world a little better.
For the animals,
