Cop Dumps 10 Orphaned Ducklings Into A Pond — Then Something Amazing Happens

"It was the most precious kind of thing I've ever witnessed."

Chances of survival are sadly slim for little ducklings forced to fend for themselves, facing a big, wide world full of dangers without a parent to guide them.

But fortunately for a group of baby ducks who recently lost their mother, they weren't alone for long.

On Tuesday, animal control officer Diane Desrosiers came to the rescue of 10 ducklings who had wandered onto a busy roadway in Southgate, Michigan. Unfortunately, the feathered youngsters' mom was nowhere to be seen, so Desrosiers had no choice but to load them into a pet carrier for safekeeping.

Being orphans, the baby birds were in a very tough spot — but then Desrosiers had an idea.

She drove them to the nearby South Winds Golf Club, where a wild duck named Stella had recently hatched nine babies of her own in one of the course's ponds. It was there that golf pro Chris Grandy‎ saw what he described as "the most precious kind of thing I’ve ever witnessed."

Desrosiers dumped the babies in, and Stella swam over to them immediately. As soon as she realized they were without a mom, she gathered them up and led them back to her own brood, adopting them on the spot.

"She's basically saying, 'Follow me,'" someone can be heard saying in the video.

Just like that, the ducklings were back on track to a normal life. Desrosiers wasn't immediately available for comment about the adoption she helped facilitate, but in many ways the power of Stella's maternal instinct speaks for itself. The baby ducks, of course, required no explanation.

"They lost their mom and now they got a new mom," Grandy told FOX 2 News. "It was the most precious kind of thing I’ve ever witnessed. It was such a motherly thing."
